Church Zarrentin

Church of St.

Peter & St. Paul in Zarrentin Zarrentin Church is a Gothic parish church and former monastery church in the historic town center of Zarrentin am Schaalsee. The Romanesque fieldstone and brick church was a village church in the first half of the 13th century. Around 1250, the Zarrentin convent was founded as a Cistercian monastery. The parish church now became the convent church. The Romanesque fieldstone masonry of the square choir dates back to the 1230s/40s. In 1460, using parts of the old church, the current Gothic nave was built from bricks. In 1552, the nunnery was dissolved and the church was once again the parish church of the village.

Church of Zarrentin - Romanesque and Gothic in the historic town center

The church of St. Peter and St. Paul in Zarrentin is one of the most remarkable sacred buildings in western Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The church in the historic town center of Zarrentin am Schaalsee impressively combines two building eras: The Romanesque fieldstone masonry of the square choir dates back to the 1230s and 1240s, making it one of the oldest surviving buildings in the region.

From village church to Cistercian monastery church

The building originally served as a simple village church. Around 1250, the Zarrentin monastery was founded as a Cistercian nunnery, whereupon the parish church became the monastery church. In 1460, using parts of the older building, the current Gothic nave was built from bricks. After the abolition of the nunnery in 1552, the church returned to its original function as the parish church of the village - a role it still fulfills today.

Church of Zarrentin as an excursion destination in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern

For those exploring Mecklenburg-Vorpommern away from the well-known coastal towns such as Wismar, Rostock or Stralsund, Zarrentin am Schaalsee offers a quiet alternative with historical depth. The church can be easily combined with a walk through the town and a visit to the natural Schaalsee lake.

With systemic counseling, I support you in clarifying what your goal is, what resources are available to you and what may be preventing you from continuing on your path in the direction you want to go.
