Teufelsstein - Megalithic Tomb near Seelvitz

Near the “Hüningsbusch” megalithic tomb lies the “Teufelsstein” megalithic tomb. The tomb, which has a severely disturbed burial chamber, belongs to the group of large dolmens with a vestibule typical of Rügen. On the clay soil—which in turn lay on a bed of pigeon-egg-sized flint pebbles—sections composed of individual stone slabs set vertically were identified. Only a few Neolithic finds, such as two hand millstones, some pottery, and an amber bead, were recovered from the burial chamber. A sandstone grinding slab was used as a threshold stone. Another distinctive feature is the three small bowls attached to the surface of the keystone.

The “Teufelsstein” is a Neolithic megalithic tomb not far from the well-known “Hüningsbusch” megalithic tomb near Seelvitz in Zirkow on the island of Rügen. The megalithic tomb belongs to the group of large dolmens with a vestibule typical of Rügen and is considered one of the most remarkable archaeological sites in the Baltic Sea region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
Distinctive features of the burial chamber and archaeological finds
The burial chamber of the Teufelsstein has been severely disturbed, but its original construction can still be discerned. On a clay floor resting on a bed of pigeon-egg-sized flint pebbles, compartments made of vertically erected stone slabs were identified. A sandstone grinding slab served as a threshold stone. The excavations yielded only a few finds: two hand millstones, some pottery, and an amber bead. Particularly striking are three small bowls carved into the surface of the keystone—a design feature rare in northern Germany.

The "Hüningsbusch" megalithic tomb is located in the southeastern part of the island of Rügel, along with numerous other megalithic tombs. The “Hüningsbusch,” a megalithic tomb near Seelvitz, belongs to the Funnel Beaker Culture type of large dolmen with a vestibule. The tomb is surrounded by other megalithic tombs, all of which are located in a region rich in megalithic tombs in the southeastern part of the island of Rügen. One of the damaged capstones, as well as a wall stone, revealed several small bowls on the surface. The 1970 excavation conducted by Adolf Hollnagel revealed that the burial chamber of the east-west-oriented, trapezoidal megalithic tomb had been severely disturbed. Several finds, such as amber beads, axes, cross-cutters, and other flint tools, as well as pottery shards, bones, and a hand millstone, were uncovered from the burial chamber.
