City library in the Wismar arsenal - history and architecture

The Zeughaus in Wismar is considered one of the most important baroque examples of Swedish military architecture in the whole of Germany. The present building owes its origins to a dramatic event: in 1699, a powerful powder tower explosion triggered by a severe thunderstorm completely destroyed the old arsenal. The new, imposing baroque building, which still characterizes the cityscape of Wismar today, was built on the same site in 1700.

Unique roof truss with double suspended construction

The building's unusual roof truss is of particular importance in terms of monument preservation. Its double suspended structure allows for a completely column-free upper floor measuring an impressive 60 by 15 meters. The entire load of the roof truss rests solely on the surrounding walls - a masterpiece of structural engineering that is unparalleled in the Baltic Sea region.

Wismar City Library with over 80,000 media units

Today, the historic Zeughaus houses the Wismar City Library with a collection of over 80,000 media units. The building thus combines Hanseatic history and modern cultural life in a unique way - in the spirit of the UNESCO World Heritage city of Wismar on the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania.
