The Frische Grube is one of the oldest artificial watercourses in Germany that runs through a city.

It connects Lake Schwerin with the Baltic Sea via the Mühlenteich, Wallensteingraben and Lostener See. Built in the middle of the 13th century using field stones, the pit served as a drinking and industrial water supply for the city's inhabitants for a long time. Its water powered mill wheels and was a reservoir for fire-fighting water.

Frische Grube Wismar - Medieval water supply in the middle of the city

The Frische Grube in Wismar is one of the oldest artificial watercourses in Germany that run through an urban area. Built from field stones in the mid-13th century, it supplied the residents of Wismar with drinking and process water for centuries. Its course connects Lake Schwerin with the Baltic Sea via the mill pond, the Wallensteingraben and Lake Losten.

Multiple uses in medieval Wismar

The water of the Frische Grube had several functions in everyday medieval life: It powered mill wheels, served as a fire-fighting water reservoir and ensured the daily water supply for the town's population. This multitude of functions makes the watercourse an impressive testimony to medieval engineering in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
