Tree house

The tree house is a baroque building from the middle of the 18th century.

The building with the two Swedish heads in front of the portal takes its name from the turnpike that used to be here. The eponymous "tree" was a floating long timber used to block off the harbor entrance. It was closed during the night or when danger was imminent. The Baumhaus am Alten Hafen in Wismar opened the permanent exhibition "Maritime Traditions Center" on 05.04.2019. The exhibition offers insights into the development of the Hanseatic city of Wismar during the Hanseatic era, the replica of the "Poeler Kogge", the restoration of the pilot schooner "Atalanta" and the fishing cutter "Marlen", as well as the eventful shipbuilding in Wismar with the development of the Wismar shipyard from 1946 to the present day. Impressive exhibits show the love for the traditional ships and the pride in shipbuilding in Wismar.

The tree house in Wismar - baroque building with a long harbor history

The tree house at the old harbor in Wismar is a striking baroque building from the middle of the 18th century. The building owes its unusual name to a floating log - the so-called "tree" - which used to block off the harbor entrance. When it was dark or danger threatened, this barrier was closed to secure the harbor. Two Swedish heads still adorn the portal today and are a reminder of the eventful history of the Hanseatic city of Wismar in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Permanent exhibition "Maritime Traditions Center" in the tree house

Since April 2019, the Baumhaus has been home to the permanent exhibition "Maritime Traditions Center". A tour leads through the history of Wismar as an important Hanseatic city and shows, among other things, the replica of the Poel cog and the restoration of the pilot schooner "Atalanta" and the fishing cutter "Marlen". Another focus is dedicated to shipbuilding in Wismar and the development of the local shipyard from 1946 to the present day. The exhibits impressively convey the importance of seafaring and shipbuilding for the region and beyond the Baltic Sea coast.
