You’re in for unforgettable summer evenings at the Schlossgarten Festspiele Neustrelitz! Against the magnificent backdrop of the historic palace gardens, a unique open-air experience unfolds, filled with music, theater, and impressive stagecraft. The Neustrelitz State Theater looks back on an eventful history dating back to the 18th century. Originally built between 1755 and 1758 as a riding hall in the palace gardens based on a French model, the building was converted into a redouta hall in 1769 by master mason Martin Seydel and inaugurated by the “Ducal Society of German Actors.” From 1775 onward, it served as the permanent court theater and retained its exterior appearance until January 15, 1924. After a performance of Richard Wagner’s opera “Tannhäuser,” the building burned to the ground. Over the next four years, it was rebuilt in a modern style under the direction of the Munich architect Prof. Max Littmann. In May 1945, the theater was once again destroyed by fire. It was not until 1954 that it could be reopened, based on Littmann’s plans, now as the “Friedrich-Wolf-Theater” of what was then the Neubrandenburg district. Since 1991, this historic venue has once again borne the name Landestheater. Today, the auditorium has 400 seats and houses the artistic director’s office, the workshops, and the administration of Theater und Orchester GmbH Neubrandenburg/Neustrelitz. You can find the current program here.

History of the Neustrelitz State Theater since the 18th century
The building has a turbulent history. Originally built between 1755 and 1758 as a riding hall, it was converted into a redouta hall in 1769 and served as a permanent court theater starting in 1775. After two fires—in 1924 and 1945—the building was rebuilt each time and reopened in 1954 as the “Friedrich-Wolf-Theater.” Since 1991, it has once again borne the name Landestheater. Today’s auditorium seats 400 people.
