Bützow · 53.8473° N, 11.9866° E
Watermill Bützow

To the left of Bützow harbor is a mill complex, of which the mill building and one of two water wheels are still preserved.

In 1894, a new building was built to replace the four-gear water mill. Work continued in the mill until 1959. The buildings of the mill complex are largely empty today. There is a restaurant on the first floor.

Bützow Watermill - history on the banks of the harbor

On the left bank of Bützow harbour is an impressive mill complex that makes the region's industrial history visible. The striking mill building and one of originally two water wheels are still preserved from the former facility. The watermill in Bützow is therefore one of the most interesting historical relics that the small town in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern has to offer.

New building in 1894 - from four-gear mill to modern operation

In 1894, a new building was constructed on this site to replace the older four-gear watermill. Work continued in the mill until 1959, before operations were finally discontinued. Today, the buildings of the complex are mostly empty and are a reminder of a bygone era of the mill trade in Mecklenburg.

Restaurant on the first floor of the historic mill

Today, a restaurant is located on the first floor of the mill building, allowing visitors to experience the historical ambience first-hand. Bützow is conveniently located in the middle of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and is a worthwhile stopover on the way to the Baltic Sea coast - for example to Rostock, Wismar or Fischland-Darß-Zingst.

Bützow Castle

Bützow Castle

Bützow

Bützow Castle once served as the seat of a bishop. In 1239, the bishops of Schwerin built a castle, which was converted into a Renaissance palace in the mid-16th century under Duke Ulrich. Unfortunately, very little of the ring-shaped castle complex remains. Only the three-bay bishop's chapel, which now houses a museum of local history, gives an idea of the past. Since its reconstruction in 1910/1911, the original Renaissance castle has been a simple, three-storey plaster building with a high gabled roof. The foundation walls date back to the 13th or 14th century. During the GDR era, the building served as a cultural center and later housed a library and museum. For some years now, the castle has been undergoing renovation in order to use it as a company headquarters with offices and company apartments.
