Bützow Castle - a former bishop's seat with medieval roots
Bützow Castle is one of the most historic buildings in the heart of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The bishops of Schwerin built a castle on this site as early as 1239, which was converted into a Renaissance palace in the mid-16th century under Duke Ulrich. This makes the castle in Bützow one of the oldest secular buildings in the region between Rostock and Wismar.
Bishop's chapel and local history museum - witnesses to the medieval castle complex
Only little of the original ring-shaped castle complex remains today. The three-bay bishop's chapel from the 13th or 14th century, which now houses a local history museum, is particularly worth seeing. It provides a rare insight into the village's medieval past and complements the cultural offerings of the region around Fischland-Darß-Zingst and the Mecklenburg Baltic coast.
Bützow Castle today - renovation and new use
After a renovation in 1910/1911, today's castle building presents itself as a simple, three-storey plaster building with a high pitched roof. In GDR times, it served as a cultural center, later as a library and museum. The palace has been undergoing renovation for several years and will be used as a company headquarters with offices and company apartments in the future.
