The view of Western Europe's largest lowland moor area will take your breath away. A true bird paradise! The amphibious marshland of the flooded polder meadows on the western shore of Lake Kummerow attracts dozens of waterfowl species, from the tiny teal to the red-necked grebe. Snipes and dunlins poke around the edges of the mudflats for worms. Great white egrets, cranes, sea eagles and ospreys, kingfishers and bearded tits also feel at home in this natural paradise and, with a bit of luck, can be observed here in their natural habitat. See for yourself - a journey into another world awaits you! In addition to the large observation tower, other smaller observation towers can be used along the path through the renaturation area.
Dargun Castle Park

In Dargun Castle Park, you can stroll along historic paths, visit the castle grounds and the museum, and browse the Dargun monastery shop. Today’s castle garden bears traces of the Renaissance, the Baroque, and the 19th century, as well as a careful reconstruction carried out in recent years. The parterre beds surrounding the pavilion, indicated by slightly sunken grass paths, are reminiscent of the design of the palace garden in Güstrow. The Renaissance layout was created under Duke Johann Albrecht, who often stayed in Dargun. The gardens were devastated during the Thirty Years’ War. Under Duke Gustav Adolf, the palace gardens were redesigned in the Baroque style. The old yews are remnants of Baroque topiary trees. The garden sections are aligned via paths toward the tea pavilion, which was built around 1690. For the Baroque garden, the relationship to the palace was important. The garden was accessed via the double-flight open staircase at the southwest tower. Based on a design by Klett, the court gardener in Schwerin, the four-row avenue of red-flowering chestnut trees was planted in the previous century along the western castle entrance up to the Yellow Gate, and the arbour with hornbeams south of the church entrance was created. The agricultural school, which moved into the palace in 1873, used the palace garden for educational purposes. After 1945, the grounds were divided into allotment gardens and a small zoo was established. As part of the garden’s reconstruction, the allotment gardens were relocated and an open orchard was reestablished. Klett’s arbor was reconstructed, and a row of red-flowering chestnut trees was planted along the four-row avenue. Today, in the sprawling park, you can see, among other things, yew trees over 300 years old, a hornbeam arbor, a ginkgo tree, a large orchard meadow, a fish ladder completed in 2016, and the tea pavilion—which serves as the local registry office. In 2020, a barrier-free loop trail was completed for visitors with limited mobility. The park is open to the public and offers ample free parking as well as a public restroom. You can perfectly combine a stroll through the park with a tour of the monastery and castle grounds, a visit to “Uns lütt Museum,” or a shopping trip at the Dargun monastery shop.
Fish ladder in the Dargun monastery and castle complex

Since 2017, there has been a fish ladder in the Dargun monastery and castle complex, which comprises 90 steps and overcomes a height difference of 9.5 m. The outlet of the monastery lake in Dargun was modified in 2017. The new weir installed regulates the water level using a mechanical balance system without human intervention. The intention is to prevent the flooding that has occurred in the past from happening again in the future. A fish ladder has been built next to the weir. This means that the Röcknitzbach is ecologically passable as far as the Klostersee in accordance with the objectives of the European Water Framework Directive. This means that the fish species that see the light of day in the headwaters of rivers can swim downstream towards the sea without being hindered by weirs, interlocks or barrages. Later, they return to the place where they were born to deposit their offspring in the same place. The fish ladder comprises a total of 90 steps and overcomes a height difference of around 9.5 m.
Restaurant and guesthouse Aalbude

The Aalbude restaurant is located right at the mouth of Lake Kummerow, directly on the River Peene, and has a long jetty for water sports enthusiasts. Here, motorboats and sailing boats can moor directly in front of the restaurant and enjoy the service. The tastefully furnished rooms with a view of the Peene Canal leave nothing to be desired and the idyllic location directly on Lake Kummerow will make your stay a unique experience! Our restaurant offers guests 36 indoor and 32 terrace seats. In addition, a separate guest room for family celebrations with 45 seats can be used. The menu includes a variety of fish and meat dishes. The fish comes mainly from the waters of the region. Thanks to its excellent service and tasty dishes, the Aalbude restaurant has quickly made a name for itself far beyond the region's borders. Many water sports enthusiasts use the restaurant at the Aalbude for a short break to recharge their batteries.
Wedding pavilion in the Dargun monastery and castle complex

In the white pavilion in the castle park, bridal couples can say "I do" in a wonderful ambience. The pavilion in the middle of the castle park offers seating for the bridal couple and 30 guests, but smaller parties can also find a worthy setting for their wedding here. The 300-year-old yew trees, the hornbeam avenue and the renovated flight of steps provide a great backdrop for unforgettable wedding photos. There is also plenty of space in the park for champagne receptions after the ceremony. Rooms for celebrations for up to 100 people can be hired in the monastery and castle grounds.
Maze at Waldeck

Simply crazy - the maze in Dargun invites you to play a little game of hide and seek. 2 different paths lead to the destination, but some also lead to a dead end. The maze in Dargun is an 8500 m² green area with branching but equally artfully designed paths formed by hornbeam hedges that are taller than a man. In the middle is the destination - a small wooden observation tower from which you can look out over the entire park. Planted between 2000 and 2002, the maze with its 2035m long path system was officially opened on 13.06.2008. The maze is open daily. Admission is free. Parking spaces and caravan sites are located directly in front of the maze. Allow approx. 60 minutes for a visit to the maze.
Dargun Monastery Shop

The rustic monastery store is located in the former granary building of the Dargun monastery and castle complex. We stock regional products, handicrafts and specialties from our own production as well as from the region. Souvenirs and small gifts for your loved ones or yourself are guaranteed to be found here. Wild boar salami, chutneys, spices, handmade chocolate truffles - the Darguner Klostervogt has a wide range of regional products. If you like, you can book a table in the bright and comfortably furnished vaulted room above the store and sample a selection of the numerous specialties. The Klostervogt will cater to the wishes of his guests. It is ideal to combine the tasting with a guided tour of the monastery and castle grounds or a visit to the lovingly maintained museum on the grounds. During these culinary tours, guests slip into the role of the former Cistercian monks themselves and embark on an entertaining and wholesome journey through time. These group events for up to 24 people are individually tailored to the visitors and must be booked in advance. Browsing and shopping in the monastery store is possible daily from 10 am to 12 pm and 2 pm to 4 pm.
