Wiethagen Forestry and Charcoal Farm – Experience the History of Tar Production

The Wiethagen Forestry and Charcoal Farm is located on the southern edge of the Rostock Heath, not far from the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The farm’s history dates back to 1837, when the tar distillery began operations here. Today, the farm is home to the only historic and still-functioning tar kiln in Germany—a rare testament to the history of forestry craftsmanship.

Exhibitions and Activities for Families and School Groups

Since 1993, the farm has been operated by the Association of Friends and Supporters of the Forestry and Charcoal-Burning Farm (Verein der Freunde und Förderer des Forst- und Köhlerhofes e.V.) and has become a popular destination for families, school groups, and tour groups. The Forestry and Tar-Smelting Museum features a permanent exhibition on the military use of the Rostock Heath. A miniature model trail illustrates various furnaces for charcoal and tar production, and a wood-gas-powered wheeled tractor complements the technical ensemble.

Fairytale Forest, Sculpture Park, and Green Classroom in the Rostock Heath

In addition to the museum area, the Köhlerhof offers a variety of outdoor activities: a Fairy Tale Forest with guided tours, a sculpture park featuring stories from the Rostock Heath, and a forest and nature trail invite visitors to explore. For children, there is a playground and a Green Classroom. An old stone oven, a covered fire pit, and the “Hunting Lodge” and “Potato Cellar” facilities make the farm ideal for events and celebrations.
