Mühlenhaus Tessin – Historic Half-Timbered House on the Old Market Square

The Mühlenhaus in Tessin is considered the oldest surviving half-timbered house in the city and is located on the historic Old Market Square. Tessin is located in the district of Rostock, just a few kilometers from the Mecklenburg Baltic Sea coast—a region known for its medieval old towns such as Rostock, Wismar, Stralsund, and Greifswald. Even the small town of Tessin looks back on an eventful history: During the great city fire of 1741, the mill house fell victim to the flames but was rebuilt just one year later.

Nearly 250 years of residential history—and a witch’s mark on the gable

The house was inhabited for around 250 years before it became municipal property. Following an extensive renovation in 1993, during which all old structural elements were preserved or restored true to the original, the building has been a listed historic monument since 1994. Particularly striking is the symbolic mill embedded in the gable—according to an old superstition, this symbol was meant to keep witches and evil spirits from entering the house.
