Weinberg Rattey
The “Stargarder Land” region was added to the list of wine-growing regions in 2004.
This revived a tradition and officially authorized winegrowing in the Rattey and Burg Stargard areas. The wine is marketed under the designation “Mecklenburger Landwein.” On Friday, February 13, 2004, the Bundesrat approved an amendment to the wine legislation and, through the eleventh ordinance amending the Wine Ordinance, authorized the wine-growing region for table wine in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The “Stargarder Land” region was added to the list of wine-growing regions, thereby officially authorizing viticulture at the Rattey and Burg Stargard sites. The wine may be marketed under the designation “Mecklenburger Landwein.” The grape varieties are Ortega, Müller-Thurgau, Phönix, Huxelrebe, Regent, Spätburgunder, and Portugieser. The Spätburgunder and Portugieser varieties are being replaced by the Regent variety due to their high susceptibility to frost.

The Rattey Vineyard in Schönbeck (Rattey district) is remarkable proof that viticulture is possible even in the northern part of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Since 2004, the “Stargarder Land” region has officially been included in the list of German wine-growing regions—a decision that stems from a resolution passed by the Bundesrat on February 13, 2004. Since then, the wine grown here has been permitted to be marketed under the designation “Mecklenburger Landwein.”
Grape Varieties in the Stargarder Land – From Ortega to Regent
Various grape varieties are cultivated in the Stargarder Land wine-growing region, including Ortega, Müller-Thurgau, Phönix, Huxelrebe, and Regent. Originally, Pinot Noir and Portugieser were also planned, but their susceptibility to frost proved too high for the North German climate. They were therefore replaced by the more robust Regent variety—a pragmatic adaptation to the climatic conditions of this region south of the Baltic Sea coast.
A Winemaking Tradition Between the Baltic Sea Coast and the Mecklenburg Inland
The wine-growing region around Rattey and the nearby Burg Stargard is located in the inland area of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, far from well-known vacation destinations such as Rügen, Usedom, or Fischland-Darß-Zingst. Nevertheless, it is an interesting destination for visitors who want to explore the region away from the Baltic Sea beaches—for example, on the way from Neubrandenburg toward Stralsund or Greifswald.
