The “Stargarder Land” region was added to the list of wine-growing regions in 2004. This revived a tradition and officially authorized winegrowing in the Rattey and Burg Stargard areas. The wine is marketed under the designation “Mecklenburger Landwein.”
On Friday, February 13, 2004, the Bundesrat approved an amendment to the wine legislation and, through the eleventh ordinance amending the Wine Ordinance, authorized the wine-growing region for table wine in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The “Stargarder Land” region was added to the list of wine-growing regions, thereby officially authorizing viticulture at the Rattey and Burg Stargard sites. The wine may be marketed under the designation “Mecklenburger Landwein.”
The grape varieties are Ortega, Müller-Thurgau, Phönix, Huxelrebe, Regent, Spätburgunder, and Portugieser. The Spätburgunder and Portugieser varieties are being replaced by the Regent variety due to their high susceptibility to frost.
