Vitter Strand
● Vitt
One of the most romantic places on the island of Rügen is the little village of Vitt. It lies tucked away in a coastal gorge along the cliffs. From Vitter Strand, there is a magnificent view all the way to Cape Arkona.
Vitt has been known for centuries for the “shore sermons” delivered by Pastor Gottfried Ludwig Kosegarten, which he gave to the fishermen on the cliffs of Vitt. In his honor, construction of the Vitt Chapel began in 1806—reportedly based on plans by Karl Friedrich Schinkel—and it can still be visited today and is used for weddings. The wonderfully picturesque landscape in the north of the island of Rügen can be explored to the fullest on long walks along Vitter Beach with a view of Cape Arkona.
