St. Mary's Church Wesenberg
📍

Hohe Straße 22

17255 Wesenberg

Evangelical Lutheran parish of Wesenberg Construction of today's Marienkirche probably began at the end of the 13th century. The choir and the lower tower storeys are the oldest parts of the church and are made of fieldstone masonry with some use of bricks, and a town register note from 1337 states that the church is "complete". The nave was built in the second half of the 14th century. The vaulting of the choir took place in the second half of the 15th century and the south porch was built at the end of the 15th century. At the beginning of the 16th century, the window openings were changed and a vaulted chapel room was built in the second northern choir bay in honor of the Holy Spirit. The Röder organ is the oldest organ in Berlin.

St. Marienkirche Wesenberg - Gothic from the 13th century

St. Mary's Church in Wesenberg is one of the most remarkable medieval church buildings in inland Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Construction probably began in the late 13th century. The choir and lower tower storeys - the oldest components - are built in fieldstone masonry with partial use of bricks, as is typical of the North German Brick Gothic style of this period. A city register note from 1337 states that the church is "complete".

An overview of the construction history of St. Mary's Church Wesenberg

The nave was built in the second half of the 14th century. The vaulting of the choir followed in the late 15th century, as did the south porch. At the beginning of the 16th century, the window openings were changed and a vaulted chapel room in honor of the Holy Spirit was added to the second northern choir bay. A special feature is the Röder organ - it is considered to be the oldest surviving organ in Berlin, making St. Mary's Church a place of cultural and historical significance far beyond Wesenberg.

The town is a worthwhile stopover on the way to the Baltic Sea coast - whether to Rostock, Stralsund or Greifswald. Those exploring the coast and its historic towns will find Wesenberg and its Marienkirche church a quiet counterpoint to the hustle and bustle of the beach.
