Castle complex with local history room and exhibition on fishing and regional history, tourist information, public internet access, nationwide ticket service The castle was built in the middle of the 13th century to protect the town of "Wesenberge". As a result of the Thirty Years' War, today you can only explore the preserved torso of the keep, also known as the Fangelturm, and parts of the castle wall. The Fangelturm now serves as an observation tower. The castle premises are now used as a local history room with an exhibition on fishing and regional history, as a forestry museum and tourist information center. As every year, the traditional castle festival takes place on the 1st weekend in July with a historical parade, knightly spectacles, dancing and fireworks.

The Wesenberg castle complex with its fishing tower - medieval history in the heart of Mecklenburg

The Wesenberg castle complex with its fishing tower is one of the most striking historical landmarks in inland Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Built in the middle of the 13th century as a protective castle for the town of "Wesenberge", the turmoil of the Thirty Years' War has left clear traces. The torso of the keep - the so-called Fangelturm - and parts of the historic castle wall have been preserved.

Fangelturm Wesenberg: observation tower with sweeping views

Today, the Fangelturm serves as a lookout tower and offers visitors a beautiful view of Wesenberg and the surrounding Mecklenburg Lake District. The premises of the castle complex house a local history room with an exhibition on regional history and fishing as well as a forestry museum - a worthwhile insight into the cultural history of the region between Rostock and Neubrandenburg.

Tourist information and castle festival in Wesenberg

Inside the castle complex is also the Wesenberg tourist information center with public internet access and a nationwide ticket service. A special highlight in the annual calendar is the traditional castle festival on the first weekend in July, with a historical parade, knightly spectacles, dancing and fireworks - a living piece of the Middle Ages in the middle of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
