Historic Tile Pottery Workshop

Discover a vivid glimpse into the past and learn what stories the tiles, stoves, and master potters have to tell.

A stove just like the one at Grandma’s house back in the day! Hardly any piece of furniture is as steeped in history as the old tiled stove. The family would gather around it on cold evenings; it served as a cooking stove and, of course, as a showpiece, because these artfully decorated stoves in castles or manor houses were by no means intended solely for practical use. Discover tiled stoves ranging from the original model to faience and Art Nouveau styles, all the way to standard GDR models. In the former tile workshop, preserved in its original condition, you can also view a wide variety of tiles and tools used in tile production. This technical monument—featuring a clay cellar, a kiln, a winch for hauling clay to the upper floors, and drying areas—brings history to life and allows us to experience a bygone era.  Open from mid-May to mid-September Tuesdays and Thursdays, 2:00–5:00 p.m. Additional dates available upon request

Historic Tile Workshop in Waren (Müritz) – Craftsmanship and History Under One Roof

At the Historic Tile Workshop in Waren (Müritz), you can experience a fascinating piece of everyday history up close. Preserved in its original condition, the former pottery offers a vivid insight into the craft of tile-making—from the creation of the tiles to the artistically designed stoves that once graced the manor houses and castles of Mecklenburg.

Tiled Stoves from the Original Model to the GDR Standard

The exhibition features tiled stoves from various eras: from the simple original model to delicate faience and Art Nouveau stoves, all the way to the standard models of the GDR era. The tiled stove was not only a source of heat and a cooking area—it was the center of family life and, not infrequently, a prestigious showpiece. The diversity of the exhibits illustrates just how much function and aesthetics have changed over the centuries.

Technical monument featuring a clay cellar, kiln, and rope winch

As a technical monument, the tile stove workshop preserves not only the finished products but also the tools and spaces of the craft: the clay cellar, kiln, rope winch for transporting clay to the upper floors, and drying areas convey an authentic picture of everyday life in the workshop. Anyone familiar with the museum landscape of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania—from the Hanseatic cities of Rostock, Wismar, Stralsund, and Greifswald to the coastal regions of Fischland-Darß-Zingst, Rügen, and Usedom—will find in Waren (Müritz) a particularly down-to-earth and craft-oriented facet of regional history.
