St. Jacek Parish Church
The floor plan of the church, built in 1741, is in the shape of an equilateral Greek cross, which is a great rarity in this area.
The half-timbered structure is covered with stucco. The church is located in the northwestern part of the village, on Provincial Road No. 111. Nearby is Zatoka Stepnicka (Stepenitz Bay). The church was built between 1793 and 1741 using a timber-frame construction with brick infill in the bays and a Greek cross floor plan, which is a rarity in Western Pomerania. In 1840–1841, the façade was plastered over, so that the half-timbered structure is no longer visible. Notable features inside the church include the Baroque altar, the side and choir galleries, and the 17th-century pews.
St. Jacek Parish Church in Stepnica – A Rare Cross-Shaped Floor Plan in Western Pomerania
St. Jacek Parish Church in Stepnica is one of the most architecturally unusual religious buildings in the region. The building was constructed between 1739 and 1741 using a timber-frame structure with brick infill and follows the floor plan of an equilateral Greek cross—a rarity in Western Pomerania and throughout the coastal region between Greifswald and Szczecin. The original half-timbered structure is now concealed by a layer of stucco that was applied between 1840 and 1841.
Baroque altar and historic church furnishings from the 17th century
Remarkable furnishings have been preserved inside the church: a Baroque altar, side and choir galleries, and 17th-century pews convey an authentic impression of the religious art of past centuries. Similar ensembles can be found in the Baltic Sea region, for example in the village churches around Stralsund or Greifswald, but St. Jacek stands out distinctly due to its unusual floor plan.
Location of the church on the edge of Zatoka Stepnicka
The church is located in the northwestern part of Stepnica, near Provincial Road No. 111 and not far from Zatoka Stepnicka, Stepnica Bay. Its peaceful waterfront setting makes a visit particularly worthwhile for anyone wishing to explore the cultural history of the southern Baltic Sea coast away from well-known centers such as Usedom or Rügen.
