Sommersdorf Church – 17th-Century Fieldstone and Half-Timbered Architecture

The Sommersdorf Church is one of the characteristic village churches of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania that continue to shape the rural landscape of the region between the Baltic Sea coast and the hinterland to this day. The building was constructed in the 17th century, likely on the site of an even older predecessor. Fieldstones were combined with brick for its construction—a building technique that was widespread in the region and can also be found frequently elsewhere, such as in the areas surrounding Greifswald or Stralsund.

Construction and Architecture of the Sommersdorf Church

The church is built on an approximately square floor plan. Particularly striking is the eastern half-timbered gable, which gives the building a distinctive character. The western gable was renovated around 1900 and thus differs slightly in character from the older masonry. The windows feature segmental arches and are relatively small: there are three on each of the long sides and two more on the east wall. This understated appearance is typical of the simple sacred architecture found in Mecklenburg’s villages.
