Os near Sommersdorf
Oser (Wallberge) are narrow, elongated, gravelly ridges that form as glaciers retreat.
Resembling railroad embankments, osers can stretch for many kilometers despite being only 30 to 150 meters wide, bearing witness to the massive crevasses that crisscrossed the inland ice sheet. The crevasses followed the direction of ice flow and were further eroded by meltwater streams.
The Os near Sommersdorf—a Remnant of the Ice Age in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania
The Os near Sommersdorf is one of the remarkable geological natural monuments in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. An “Os”—also known as an “Oser” or “Wallberg”—is a narrow, elongated ridge of gravel and sand that was formed by the retreat of glaciers during the last Ice Age. Such landforms continue to shape the landscape between the Baltic Sea coast and the hinterland to this day.
Formation and Structure of an Oser Ridge
The Oser’s railroad-embankment-like shape is the result of meltwater streams that flowed through crevasses deep within the inland ice sheet. These crevasses ran along the direction of ice flow and were further eroded by the flowing meltwater. The gravel and sand carried by the water were deposited in the crevasses—after the ice melted, these accumulated ridges remained as distinctive elevations in the landscape. With a width of only 30 to 150 meters, Oser ridges can stretch for many kilometers.
Experience the geological heritage of the Baltic Sea region
Glacial landforms such as the Os near Sommersdorf are typical of the North German Plain and can also be found in similar forms on Rügen, in the Greifswald area, or between Rostock and Stralsund. They bring the glacial past of the entire Baltic Sea region to life and offer nature lovers and geology enthusiasts a rewarding insight into the history of this landscape’s formation.

Manor house Sommersdorf
● Sommersdorf
The manor house in Sommersdorf, formerly Alt-Sommersdorf, is located in the middle of the charming forest, meadow and lake landscape around Lake Kummerow. The Sommersdorf estate was owned by the von Maltzahn family, who had their headquarters on the neighboring Kummerow estate. The Rewoldt family is named as the last owner. After the previous building burned down in 1924, the building was rebuilt in a modified form. During the National Socialist era, the manor house was used as a "farm school for the training of young farmers' wives". After 1945, refugees initially moved into the manor house and it was later used for residential purposes. In 2005, construction work was carried out on the exterior façade and roof of the manor house. Today there are apartments in the house. A farm building is the headquarters of the Sommersdorf volunteer fire department.
Sommersdorf Church
● Sommersdorf
The church was built in the 17th century—probably on the site of an earlier structure—of fieldstone mixed with brick and featuring an eastern half-timbered gable on a roughly square floor plan. The western gable was rebuilt around 1900. The church has three relatively small segmental-arch windows on each long side and two on the east wall.
