Heringsdorf Church
The church in Heringsdorf belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church.
The Heringsdorf church owes its construction to the rapid development of seaside tourism on the island of Usedom in the 19th century. The Waldkirche in Bansin, completed in 1939, also owes its existence to seaside tourism. The church was built of traditional brick according to plans by Ludwig Persius, a student of Schinkel. Both Frederick William IV and many Heringsdorf residents, as well as wealthy guests from Berlin, were among the supporters of the church’s construction. The church was consecrated in September 1848 and was expanded and renovated in 1914.
Heringsdorf Church – A Brick Building Steeped in History in the Seaside Resort of Heringsdorf
The church in the seaside resort of Heringsdorf on the island of Usedom belongs to the Evangelical Lutheran Church and is one of the most remarkable historic buildings on the Baltic Sea coast of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It owes its construction to the flourishing seaside tourism of the 19th century, which made Usedom a popular destination, especially for the wealthy Berlin elite.
A Design by a Schinkel Student – Ludwig Persius and the Church on Usedom
Built according to plans by Ludwig Persius, a student of the famous Prussian architect Karl Friedrich Schinkel, the church was constructed of distinctive brick—a material with a long tradition in North German brick architecture. Among the sponsors of the church’s construction were King Frederick William IV, as well as numerous Heringsdorf residents and affluent visitors from Berlin.
Consecration in 1848 and Expansion in the Early 20th Century
The church was solemnly consecrated in September 1848. About six decades later, in 1914, the church underwent an expansion and renovation. Visitors to the imperial spas on Usedom—including Heringsdorf, Ahlbeck, and Bansin—will find in the church an authentic testament to 19th-century bourgeois seaside culture, which also left its mark on other Baltic Sea coastal towns, from Rügen to Fischland-Darß-Zingst.
