Neustadt-Glewe Town Hall

Neustadt-Glewe · Schwerin & Umgebung · 53.3834° N, 11.5856° E
Neustadt-Glewe Town Hall

The town of Neustadt-Glewe was first mentioned in 1248 and, in addition to the famous Neustadt Castle, also boasts a historic old town characterized by half-timbered buildings.

A particular highlight is the baroque town hall, which was completed in 1806 and extensively renovated in 1996. The town hall was built between 1802 and 1806 by the master mason Frey. The free-standing, fully plastered, half-timbered house in the Baroque style is located directly on the market square. In addition to the typical Baroque style elements such as the segmental arches and ribbon bows under the windows and the small ornamental balcony above the entrance, the two-storey building also features some Neoclassical elements, such as the triangular gable above the central section of the building. On the mansard roof of the town hall there is a so-called open lantern - a small tower-like attachment that can be found on many baroque town halls. The tower clock inside is equipped with a movement from 1900, which chimes every quarter of an hour. The town hall was extensively renovated in 1996 as part of the general urban renewal. Marriage in Neustadt Glewe Classic in the registry office in the town hall, medieval in the castle, ducal in the castle hotel or extravagant with a view of the lake at Barracuda Beach... there are many ways to get married in Neustadt-Glewe.

Town Hall Neustadt-Glewe - Baroque architecture in the heart of the old town

The Neustadt-Glewe town hall is one of the architectural highlights of the small town in the southwest of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. The freestanding half-timbered building was built between 1802 and 1806 by the master mason Frey and stands directly on the market square of the historic old town, which was first mentioned in a document in 1248. With its completely plastered façade, the town hall blends harmoniously into the image of a mature half-timbered town, which can also be found in a similar form in towns such as Wismar or Stralsund on the Baltic coast.

Baroque and classicist style elements at a glance

The two-storey building combines typical baroque style elements with classicist influences: segmental arches, ribbon bows under the windows and a small ornamental balcony above the entrance characterize the baroque character, while a triangular gable above the middle section refers to classicism. Particularly striking is the open lantern on the mansard roof - a tower-like attachment that can be found on many baroque town halls. The tower clock housed in it runs on clockwork dating from 1900 and chimes every quarter of an hour. In 1996, the town hall was extensively renovated as part of the general urban renewal.

However, if you prefer, you can also get married in Neustadt-Glewe at the medieval castle, in the castle hotel or with a view of the lake at Barracuda Beach - the town has several atmospheric locations for this special occasion.
