The oldest preserved fortified castle in Mecklenburg is located in Neustadt-Glewe. In the museum, visitors of all ages can not only visit the tower with its deep dungeon, the guard and defense room and the restored living room, but also learn interesting facts about life in the castle and the town. The castle is also home to the tourist information office and the castle restaurant.
The old Neustadt-Glewe Castle is one of the best-preserved castles in Mecklenburg and was intended to serve as military protection for the southern and south-eastern borders of the County of Schwerin against attacks by the County of Dannenberg and the Bishoprics of Havelberg and Ratzeburg. Around 1250, the Count of Schwerin had a castle built on a natural Elde dune on the outskirts of Neustadt-Glewe. It consists of the Old and New Houses, a curtain wall with a gate and battlements as well as a keep with shooting holes, a dungeon, a knight's hall and an abbey oriel. While the Old House served as living quarters for the castle bailiffs and servants, the ducal residence was located in the New House.
Over the course of its 700-year history, the castle has undergone various uses and several structural changes. It has been completely renovated since 2006. Today it houses exhibitions on the history of the castle and the town as well as art and special exhibitions. On a tour of the castle complex, visitors can see the tower with dungeon, guard and defense room as well as the restored living hall. The "Hofstube" is of particular importance. It is decorated with Gothic and Renaissance wall paintings and has a medieval hot-air heating system.
Once a year, on the first weekend in June, the castle comes alive with medieval hustle and bustle. Market people, jugglers, knights and the castle nobility invite you to the castle festival.
