The gallery-style Dutch windmill in Neubukow has a long history. The gallery-style Dutch windmill, with its octagonal base, was built in 1910 with an automatic wind vane and traditional wooden sails. The mill body and the cap were set on a typical eight-sided brick base. In 1937, the sails were converted to so-called “Bilau-style wind vanes,” steel mill sails developed by the flight officer Bilau. The mill is the only one of its kind in the new federal states to have such preserved sails, which also boast the greatest span of 27 meters for this type. Both the windmill mechanism and the grinding mechanism are still operational. The mill sails were restored in 1981. The mill is privately owned.

You can experience Heinrich Schliemann’s “Dream of Troy” at the memorial site in Neubukow, located between Wismar and Bad Doberan. It is right next to the Neubukow church. Discover the life and work of Neubukow’s most famous son—Heinrich Schliemann—the discoverer of ancient Troy. He was born on January 6, 1822, in the Neubukow parsonage as the fifth child of Pastor Ernst Schliemann. Today, the memorial is located in the former rector’s house (built in 1790) at Am Brink 1. Here you can admire original artifacts such as jugs, bowls, and cups that the archaeologist, born in Neubukow in 1822, excavated in Troy. Display panels with photos and explanations document the life and work of Heinrich Schliemann. Our romantic museum garden invites you to linger. With a little luck, you might spot squirrels, green woodpeckers, and other wildlife here. A short nature trail showcases various archaeological finds from the region.
