Town Museum Amtsturm Lübz
The Amtsturm is one of the best-preserved fortified towers in Germany - built over 700 years ago.
The charm and special feature of the old town of Lübz on the Müritz-Elde waterway lies in the unity of its well-preserved historical layout. The Amtsturm, the only witness to the Lübzer Eldenburg, is late Romanesque in appearance and was built at the same time as the castle between 1306 and 1308 by Margraves Otto and Hermann von Brandenburg. The castle, which was finally rebuilt, was the ducal widow's residence from 1547 to 1634. The last regent in the castle was Duchess Sophie (1569-1634). After her death, the castle fell into disrepair and was largely sold for demolition between 1691 and 1706. The last tower of this castle has been a town museum since 1976. In the four permanent exhibition rooms, visitors can learn about the castle in the context of its development from a village to the town of Lübz, about the crafts of the time, which played a major role in determining the structure, and about the life of the people of Lübz around 1900. In the upper room with a rare cell vault and the tower clock from 1856, visitors can find information about the most traditional Lübz business, the "Mecklenburgische Brauerei Lübz GmbH", founded in 1877. Since 1999, the museum has had an extended exhibition area in the historic Amtshaus - now the town hall of the town of Lübz. The building was erected in 1759 as a ducal office on the ruins and vaults of the old "Eldenburg". Traces of these previous buildings can still be seen today in the cellars that house the museum.
Municipal museum Amtsturm Lübz - over 700 years of history
The Amtsturm in Lübz is one of the best-preserved fortified towers in Germany. The Amtsturm Lübz town museum has been housed in the late Romanesque tower since 1976, which was built between 1306 and 1308 together with the Eldenburg castle by Margraves Otto and Hermann von Brandenburg. Today it is the only surviving witness to this once important castle complex. Anyone wishing to explore Mecklenburg-Vorpommern away from the Baltic coast - beyond Rostock, Stralsund or Wismar, for example - will find a special piece of regional history here.
Four exhibition rooms - from the Middle Ages to the Lübz brewery
The development from village to town of Lübz, historical crafts and everyday life around 1900 are vividly documented in four permanent exhibition rooms. In the top room, which houses a rare cell vault and a tower clock from 1856, an exhibition is dedicated to the traditional Mecklenburg Brewery Lübz, founded in 1877. Since 1999, the historic Amtshaus - now the town hall - has complemented the exhibition space. In its cellar vaults, built in 1759 on the ruins of the old Eldenburg, traces of the medieval predecessor buildings can still be discovered today.
Lübz on the Müritz-Elde waterway - old town with a historic layout
The old town of Lübz impresses with its largely closed historical layout and its location on the Müritz-Elde waterway. The Amtsturm town museum blends harmoniously into this ensemble as a striking architectural monument and makes Lübz a worthwhile excursion destination in inland Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
