Despite the small number of places on the river, the region along the course of the river holds many testimonies and small signs of the history of settlement. Starting with the Slavic Obodrites, to whom many places still owe their name, Vikings, Saxons and Christian missionaries met more or less peacefully. The influence of the Hanseatic League and later the Swedish and French occupations of Western Pomerania alternated with a more peaceful Prussian period, which ushered in a new wave of settlers from Hesse, Swabia and Westphalia in the fertile glacial valley in the 20th century. Even the GDR can still be seen here and there as a museum or tractor in the meadows. Recreation on the Peene is an active, self-designed vacation.
