The Peene River flows completely unobstructed through its glacial valley and leads directly from its sources into the Baltic Sea. No weirs or locks disturb the journey as you navigate the Peene and take in its leisurely flow with almost no current. This is another reason why a unique flora and fauna can be admired in this one-of-a-kind nature reserve in Germany. Many plant and animal species can now only be found here. Despite the few towns along the river, the region offers many historical traces and small reminders of its settlement history. Beginning with the Slavic Obodrites, to whom many towns still owe their names, Vikings, Saxons, and Christian missionaries encountered one another more or less peacefully. The influence of the Hanseatic League and, later, the Swedish and French occupations of Western Pomerania gave way to a more peaceful Prussian era, which ushered in a new wave of settlement in the 20th century from Hesse, Swabia, and Westphalia in the fertile glacial valley. Traces of the GDR also peek out here and there in the form of a museum or a tractor in the meadows. Recreation on the Peene means an active, self-guided vacation. Perhaps one of the last true nature adventures for families and travelers seeking biologically clean water, fresh air, and proximity to animals and vegetation away from the tourist hotspots. Art and culture in Loitz, a small town on the River Peene. The KulturKonsum has not only become a meeting place for the local heritage association, but also for the inhabitants of the surrounding villages. The KulturKonsum at Loitzer Peenestraße 8 is the home of the local heritage association. A lot has happened since 2014, when they took over the property. The gallery, with constantly changing exhibitions, has made a name for itself and the lectures and readings are a welcome change for the residents of the village and far beyond. The historic courtyards are a popular place to linger. Clubs and interest groups like to take advantage of the opportunity to experience a guided tour, chat over coffee and cake or watch films that tell the story of the development and growth as well as the history of the estate. Musicians from the region perform under the motto "Music in the courtyard". But the KulturFloss also brought them professional artists who spend their vacations on the Peene and perform at various locations along the river. On the occasion of the 775th anniversary of the town of Loitz, a "PeenestraßenGalerie" was created on the initiative of the association, in which painters and photographers participate. Old houses become eye-catchers again. There are concerts in the courtyard, readings in the gallery and barbecues in the summer. Incidentally, you can also say "I do" at this historic location. The KulturKonsum is a branch office of the Peenetal/Loitz registry office. Not only many people from Loitz now take advantage of the wide range of services on offer, but also numerous citizens from the surrounding villages and towns. This new meeting place is very popular. You can learn a lot about the history of the house during a guided tour. So, a visit is always worthwhile.

The sports boat marina, built in 2006, offers its guests 17 guest berths in the marina and 20 guest berths on the harbor quay wall. An e-bike charging station is available. The marina offers 17 guest berths for pleasure craft. In the harbor area, 15 pleasure craft and two passenger ships have sufficient space for mooring. There is a trailer track, camping area and parking spaces for cars and caravans. The sanitary area is equipped with disabled showers and toilets. In addition to a snack bar in the old warehouse by the harbour master, you will also find the "Korl Loitz" restaurant in the lovingly restored water station. While enjoying coffee and cake, you have a wonderful view of the marina and the Peene. If you don't have your own boat or canoe with you, you can take a Peene tour on a passenger boat from Demmin. A tip for all e-bikers - a charging station is also available.

The Loitz town information office is located in the town hall on the market square right in the town center. Over 750 years old, there was originally only a Slavic settlement here on the Peene, later the castle of Pomeranian princes stood there. Later there was even a ducal castle, which unfortunately did not survive the centuries and was completely destroyed in 1701. Instead, there are many other historic buildings, such as St. Mary's Church from the 13th century or the Stone Gate. Also worth seeing is the old town, which was essentially built in the late Middle Ages in the half-timbered style.
