Timmendorf Lighthouse

Insel Poel / OT Timmendorf · Wismar & Nordwestmecklenburg · 53.9931° N, 11.3772° E
Timmendorf Lighthouse

The Timmendorf Lighthouse is one of the landmarks of the island of Poel and one of the oldest 19th-century lighthouses still in operation.

Visitors arriving from the sea first see the Timmendorf Lighthouse. The beacon was first put into operation in 1871 and raised to its current height (21 m) in 1931. As a navigational aid at the entrance to the seaport of the Hanseatic city of Wismar, the lighthouse remains of great importance today for the increasing maritime traffic. A second, smaller “lighthouse” stands west of Gollwitz, in the north of the island of Poel.

Timmendorf Lighthouse – a historic navigational aid on the island of Poel

The Timmendorf Lighthouse, located in the district of the same name on the island of Poel, is one of the most striking landmarks on Mecklenburg’s Baltic Sea coast. The lighthouse was first put into operation as early as 1871, making it one of the oldest still-active lighthouses in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Anyone approaching the island of Poel from the sea will see it first: a familiar sight for sailors and vacationers alike.

21 meters high – a landmark at the entrance to the seaport of Wismar

In 1931, the tower was extended to its current height of 21 meters. To this day, it fulfills an important role: as a signal beacon at the entrance to the seaport of the Hanseatic city of Wismar, it safely guides the ever-increasing maritime traffic through the fairway. Wismar, with its impressive historic city center and UNESCO World Heritage status, is located just a few kilometers from the lighthouse.

Second lighthouse on the island of Poel near Gollwitz

Anyone exploring the island of Poel will notice that there is another navigational aid here: a second, smaller lighthouse stands west of Gollwitz in the north of the island. Together, the two lighthouses define the maritime landscape of this tranquil Baltic Sea island, which has retained its unspoiled character far from major tourist destinations such as Rügen, Usedom, or Fischland-Darß-Zingst.
