Museum for everyday culture of the Griesen region in Hagenow
In south-western Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, far away from the well-known Baltic seaside resorts on Rügen or Fischland-Darß-Zingst, lies Hagenow - the gateway to the Griesen Gegend. Founded in 1974, the Museum of Everyday Culture of the Griesen Gegend is dedicated to the rural and urban life of this region - from the Stone Age to the recent past.
Historic buildings and diverse collectionsThe permanent exhibition is housed in a farmhouse dating back to 1828 and in historical outbuildings. Special exhibits include the archaeological "Hagenow princely tombs", a steam engine from 1902 and the "Fischer & Havemann" machine factory from the 1920s. A reconstructed employee apartment from around 1940, a historic restaurant and a cobbler's workshop make the everyday history of the region tangible.
Forest glass, railroads and the industrial history of Mecklenburg
The exhibition is complemented by exhibits on forest glass production and railroad history - important chapters in Mecklenburg's economic development. As a research and educational facility, the museum is aimed at visitors of all ages and offers an in-depth insight into the natural and cultural area of the Griesen region.

Old Synagogue Hagenow
📍 Hagenow
The community buildings of the former Hagenow Jewish community have been part of the museum since 2001. Built in Hagenstraße in 1828, the ensemble around the synagogue is unique in Mecklenburg. The front building housed the religious school with teachers' and janitors' apartments as well as the ritual bath (mikvah). The imposing synagogue and the carriage shed stand in the courtyard. Although the interior of the synagogue was destroyed in the pogrom night of 1938, the substance of the buildings was preserved and they were extensively restored between 2004 and 2009. The permanent exhibition "Traces of Jewish life in Hagenow and West Mecklenburg" has been on display in the front building, now the Hanna Meinungen House, since 2010. In addition to three special exhibitions of art and photography, the Old Synagogue regularly hosts concerts, lectures and cultural events.
