Dambeck Church Ruins
The Dambeck church ruin (near Röbel/Müritz) was built around 1180 as an early Christian fortified church made entirely of granite stones.
It is the oldest in southern Mecklenburg. The Förderverein Kirchenruine Dambeck e.V. (Friends of the Dambeck Church Ruins) was founded in 2014 and has raised a total of €364,000 over the past 10 years. These funds come from the EU (LEADER), the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Nordkirche, the German Foundation for Monument Protection, and others. Thanks to numerous donations (Müritzsparkasse, N. Backhaus Schloss Leizen, Agrar-GmbH Minzow, etc.) to contribute an additional 27,500 €. This enabled the church ruins to be renovated, secured, and restored to a dignified condition in three construction phases. Visitors can now safely enter the site and view this truly unique building. On June 23, 2024, at 5:00 p.m., the completion of the construction work will be celebrated with an open-air concert in the ruins of the nave, followed by refreshments. This was made possible once again by the support of the MV Volunteer Foundation. During events, the choir loft—which has been re-roofed—is always open to visitors, who are given a brief guided tour there. The Massow parish’s traditional annual Pentecost Sunday service takes place there. In addition, two baptismal services have already been held there.

The Dambeck Church Ruins in Bütow, Dambeck District, are among the most remarkable historical landmarks in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Built around 1180 as an early Christian fortified church entirely of granite, it is considered the oldest of its kind in southern Mecklenburg. While the Baltic Sea coast, with cities such as Rostock, Stralsund, and Greifswald, is known for its Brick Gothic churches, the inland region around Lake Müritz, with Dambeck, preserves an even older chapter of regional church history.
Restoration and Preservation of the Dambeck Granite Church
Since the founding of the Förderverein Kirchenruine Dambeck e.V. in 2014, approximately 364,000 euros have been raised for the restoration. Funding from the EU (LEADER), the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the Federal Republic of Germany, the Nordkirche, and the German Foundation for Monument Protection, together with local donors from the region, made three construction phases possible. The site is now safe to walk through; the choir area has been re-roofed and can be visited during events.
Events and church services at the Dambeck Church Ruins
Life has returned to the historic ruin: The Massow parish’s annual Pentecost Sunday service takes place here, and baptismal services have also been celebrated within the walls of the old fortified church. During events, the Friends of the Ruins Association regularly opens the choir loft and offers visitors short guided tours—a quiet, impressive experience away from the Baltic Sea beaches.
