Altkalen Windmill – the last working windmill in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania

The Altkalen Windmill is a unique testament to traditional craftsmanship in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Built in 1913, this so-called “base-story Dutch-style windmill” remains in operation to this day. As the only operational windmill in the entire state, the Altkalen Mill regularly grinds grain using wind power—just as was customary in our grandparents’ day. The fully preserved milling system makes the building an authentic technical monument.

Wind-ground flour, baking days, and the Grain and Baking Experience Route

The Altkalen Mill is located along the Grain and Baking Experience Trail and offers a lively glimpse into the mill tradition. Anyone wondering what wind-ground flour is and where to find it will find the answer right here on site. During the popular Mühlenhof Baking Days, bread and cakes are baked in an open-air oven. The mill’s sails still turn today, and guided tours of the facility are available by appointment.

Altkalen as a Destination on the Baltic Sea Coast

Altkalen is located in the heart of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, not far from the Baltic Sea coast and well-known destinations such as Rostock and the Fischland-Darß-Zingst Peninsula. The windmill is a great cultural stop on a tour of the north—away from the large tourist crowds, but with a genuine regional character.
