The Catholic Provost Church of St. Anna is located in the city center of Schwerin. The building blends in with the magnificent facades of the houses on Schlossstraße. It was built in the 18th century as the first Catholic church in Mecklenburg following the Reformation. The church is dedicated to St. Anne, the mother of Mary. Services and concerts are held there. The vast majority of churches in Mecklenburg have been Protestant since the Reformation. Construction of St. Anna on Schloßstraße in the Neoclassical style began in 1791. The church was consecrated four years later. The church is dedicated to St. Anna, the mother of Mary. Of the once-rich Neoclassical furnishings, only the pulpit remains today. The wooden “Anna Selbdritt” group dates from the Late Gothic period. The granite baptismal font was crafted at the Schwerin grinding mill and was a gift from the ruling duke. The tabernacle, cross, and a bronze relief are works of modern church art from the 1980s. The church windows depict various saints and Nils Stensen, whose work in Schwerin is also specially honored through additional bronze reliefs inside the church and on its exterior walls. St. Anna possesses a significant collection of books and writings from the past 400 years, some of which are displayed in exhibitions.
Commander's House

The Commander’s House on the southern shore of the Pfaffenteich in Schwerin is an elegant example of Neoclassical architecture and served as the official residence and headquarters of the commander of the Grenadier Guard Battalion. Built between 1836 and 1837, it is a symbol of the reform and modernization of the Mecklenburg military under Grand Duke Paul Friedrich. The highly prestigious Commander’s House is located on the southern shore of the Pfaffenteich. The former official residence and headquarters of the commander of the Grenadier Guard Battalion captivates with its elegant, understated simplicity. Even before the relocation of the residence from Ludwigslust to Schwerin, Grand Duke Paul Friedrich had made the relocation and modernization of the Mecklenburg military his top priority. At the age of ten, he had already joined the Ludwigslust Grenadier Guard Battalion and, at just 22 years old, was appointed Major General of Mecklenburg-Schwerin: Hereditary Duke Paul Friedrich. He had served as commander since 1830. When he assumed the regency as Grand Duke in 1837, he continued to devote himself primarily to a comprehensive reform of the Mecklenburg military. Through investments in training, facilities, and equipment, the Mecklenburg units were modernized. To expand the city, its outskirts—including Ostorfer Berg, Werderstraße, and the Reifferbahn—offered the best conditions: The first construction project of this reform and modernization was the Commandant’s House, built by Georg Adolph Demmler from 1836 to 1837. Today, the ground floor houses a retail space, and the upper floors are used as residential and commercial spaces. About the Style The Commander’s House was built as an office and residence for the commander of the Mecklenburg Brigade, Major General Hartwig von Elderhorst, as a plastered half-timbered structure. Grand Duke Paul Friedrich commissioned Georg Adolph Demmler to carry out the construction. The north-facing main facade features nine bays. The ground floor was planned as a retail space even at the time of construction, and a store continues to operate there today. The round-arched openings were restored during the building’s renovation. The entrances and windows in the base section of the half-timbered building’s facades feature round arches. Demmler designed the structure in accordance with the canons of Neoclassical composition. The window heights on the bel étage and the upper story are proportionally reduced as they rise upward. The decorative gables with stuccoed pinnacles on the bel étage, which have been preserved to this day, reflect the historic function of the official residence as a commander’s quarters. In 1883, the complex passed into private hands through an exchange. The windows on the upper floor are rectangular with straight window canopies. With their profiled sill cornices, they rest on a continuous string course. Above them, two pinnacles refer to the owner, Major General Elderhorst. The windows on the second floor are lower and lack window canopies. A corbel cornice caps the façade. The overhang of the flat roof had already been removed by the end of the 19th century and replaced with a balustrade.
Art gallery Kunstwasserwerk

The Kunstwasserwerk combines exhibition rooms and spaces as well as studios for painters, graphic artists, sculptors and photographers under one roof. The Kunst-Wasser-Werk e. V. association thus enables an excellent re-use of a (partially listed) object of Schwerin's industrial history. Schwerin artists have found a creative home in the old waterworks in Schwerin-Neumühle: studios, workshops and exhibition spaces are available for them. 9 studios and workshops in the various buildings are currently in permanent use by artists of different genres (painting, sculpture, jewelry, graphics, photography). Artist groups, workshop participants and painting groups are regular guests at KWW and use the workshop building and the open spaces for creative courses. Exhibitions and events regularly attract an interested public to the premises. Art exhibitions by regional and national artists are regularly held in the gallery rooms in the old main building and the former pump house. Since the opening of the Former Pump House as an exhibition and event hall with a concert by the Schwerin Singakademie, concerts, theater and readings have been held in the Kunstwasserwerk to accompany the exhibitions. From classical chamber music and jazz in the pump house to electro beats as an open-air concert, the association organizes musical highlights on its own or in cooperation with other sponsors.

The glazier Schwede built the house in 1873. From 1783/85 onward, Count Bernhard Friedrich von Bassewitz was the owner of the estate, described as a “house with an adjoining wing, a wood shed, and a stable with a carriage house.” Through the purchase of two adjacent plots of land, the property was expanded into a stately residence. Its elegance defines the character of today’s palace. The estate has been in grand ducal ownership since around 1820. Following extensive renovations and the addition of a large hall facing the courtyard, it was designated as the official residence of the President of the Chamber. Since the mid-19th century, various government ministers have resided here. In 1896, the stately residence underwent extensive modernization to serve as the palace for the “Privy Councilor,” the state’s prime minister. About the Style The nine-axis, two-story half-timbered palace features two stately, double-axis mansard extensions in its roof area. The structure of the individual houses is still visible today in the half-timbering of the facade. The complex’s preserved enclosed courtyard underscores the ceremonial character of what was once an urban nobleman’s estate and later the palace of the Grand Ducal Prime Minister.

Equestrian monument to Frederick Francis II in Schwerin Palace Gardens

The equestrian statue of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin stands opposite the palace on a square in the palace garden. Surrounded by flowers, rose bushes and the romantic arcades, the grounds are a highlight of the Schwerin Palace Gardens. A monument to the Grand Duke After the death of the popular Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II - the builder of the palace in Schwerin - his son commissioned the construction of a monumental statue. The object was financed by donations. It is considered to be the only historical equestrian statue in the whole of Mecklenburg. An eventful history The work by the Mecklenburg sculptor Ludwig Brunow was ceremoniously unveiled in 1893 - in the presence of high-ranking state guests such as Emperor Wilhelm II and Grand Duke Vladimir of Russia, as well as all the nobility of the Mecklenburg court. Inspired by the equestrian statues of Roman emperors and the Prussian Elector in Berlin, it was designed according to the typical, mostly military-influenced taste of the late 19th century. The figures of the Grand Duke and his horse stand on a marble plinth more than 4 meters high. The ruler's virtues The plinth is surrounded by allegories of the 4 virtues of rulers: Strength, Justice, Wisdom and Faith. Two commemorative plaques show events from Frederick Francis II's reign - the construction of the new university building in Rostock and the Grand Duke's entry into Schwerin in 1871. The monument was lucky to survive two wars and two dictatorships. It escaped being melted down for war purposes, the iconoclasm after the end of the war and being scrapped.
