Experience this historic schooner-brig on a day cruise or a multi-day voyage across the Baltic Sea, following in the footsteps of the Hanseatic League! The steel two-masted vessel with its characteristic square sails was built in 1951 at the Warnow Shipyard in Warnemünde and commissioned under the name “Wilhelm Pieck.” Until 1990, it served as the flagship of the GST Naval School in Greifswald-Wieck and conducted training voyages for young sailors. After the political transition, the ship was completely overhauled and converted. Since then, it has been owned and operated by the Greif Maritime Sports Center, a municipal enterprise of the University and Hanseatic City of Greifswald. Under the name “GREIF,” it sails as a civilian training ship with volunteer and paying crew members, calling at the most beautiful ports in the North and Baltic Seas from April through October: Ystad, Copenhagen, Klaipeda, Gdańsk, and other destinations are on the itinerary every year. A sail area of 570 m², distributed across 15 sails, allows for a speed of up to 14 knots. The ship is equipped according to the latest safety regulations and holds a sailing license as a training ship. It is sailed jointly by a professional core crew and volunteer crew members from the "Rahsegler GREIF e.V." support association. If you’re looking for a special experience, the “GREIF” is the place for you. By the way, no prior experience is necessary: the team’s experienced crew members introduce new sailors to traditional seamanship step by step. Welcome aboard!
Wieck Sailing and Fishing Harbor

Wieck is one of the oldest fishing villages in northern Germany and has close ties to the monastery in Eldena. Even back then, the fishing port on the Ryck River served as an important outer harbor for the city of Greifswald. The historic fishing village of Wieck is located directly on the Greifswald Bodden. The village’s landmark is the Wieck bascule bridge, built in the Dutch style. Fishing, in particular, is still very much a part of life here. Whether it’s fish sandwiches, typical regional fish dishes, or more unusual creations—food lovers will find a wide array of culinary delights. Along the Ryck River, which flows into the Bodden here, numerous fishing boats, yachts, and sailboats are moored, underscoring the town’s maritime charm. The beautiful promenade, where you’ll find wooden sculptures by international and local artists, and the direct beachfront location also invite you to take long walks. As a district of the Hanseatic city of Greifswald, there are also numerous entertainment options and places to visit beyond the fishing village itself. Gaffelrigg Fishermen’s Festival Traditionally, the “Gaffelrigg” Fishermen’s Festival takes place on the third weekend of July in the Hanseatic city of Greifswald. It is the largest maritime folk festival in Western Pomerania and offers its guests not only numerous entertainment options but also the eponymous “Gaffellrigg” fleet of traditional and museum ships, as well as a colorful supporting program.
Greifswald Floodgate

The Greifswald floodgate is located in the cross-section of the Ryck federal waterway at its mouth into the “Dänische Wiek” in the Greifswald-Wieck district. It is an integral part of the flood protection system for the university and Hanseatic city of Greifswald. The Ryck, which is about four meters deep, is approximately 60 meters wide at this point and serves as the access channel to the city harbor of Greifswald. The primary purpose of the largest technical coastal protection structure on the German Baltic Sea coast is to provide protection against flooding during storm surges while preserving the brackish-water-dependent biotopes in the Ryck lowlands. A structure was developed that strikes an optimal balance between safety, functionality, urban aesthetic appeal, and cost.
Greifswald Observatory

The Greifswald Observatory is the largest observatory in the state of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. It was founded by Andreas Mayer and Lambert Heinrich Röhl. Since 1992, the association has been maintaining and modernizing the historic Carl Zeiss instruments under the dome of the old Physics Institute, where a 40-cm reflecting telescope and a 20-cm refracting telescope are available. In 2001, the minor planet 10114 (RZ 1992) was named “Greifswald” by its discoverers, Lutz Schmadel and Freimut Börngen. With the Johannes Conrads Award, the association aims to inspire the hearts and minds of the next generation for astronomy. Important historical observations: Venus transits in 1761 & 1769 as well as 2004 & 2012.

Greifswald Theater and Civic Center

The Greifswald Theater is part of Theater Vorpommern—along with the Stralsund Theater since 1994 and the Putbus Theater since 2006. The administrative office, the drama department, the ballet, and the Philharmonic Orchestra are all based here. The theater building opened on October 10, 1915. The Stadthalle had already opened on December 10, 1914. Following extensive renovation and restoration work, the Stadthalle was reopened on December 18, 2009. Since then, the theater and the Stadthalle, together with the Kaisersaal and the Rubenowsaal, have once again formed a unified building complex.

The Traditional Ship Vorpommern

The historic ship Vorpommern is operated by Sozialwerk Vorpommern e.V. The historic ship Vorpommern is a schooner measuring 17.6 m (21.2 m) in length and 5.6 m in width, built in 1950 as a fishing cutter. The total sail area is 150 m². There are ten berths available in two rustic cabins. After being converted into a schooner in 1996, the ship was put back into service. Its home port is the Greifswald Museum Harbor. During the summer months, cruises are offered throughout the Baltic Sea region. Fishing trips are also available.
University of Greifswald

The University of Greifswald is one of the oldest universities in Europe. The baroque main building with the old faculties in the middle of the old town is a particularly popular destination for tourists. Founded in 1456, the University of Greifswald is the second oldest in Northern Europe. It was founded on the initiative of the then mayor - and soon afterwards first rector - Heinrich Rubenow. Due to its long tradition, the University of Greifswald has numerous collections with several million objects like no other in Germany. More than 12,000 students enliven the city of around 60,000 inhabitants and ensure a varied and lively atmosphere. The university's baroque main building on Rubenowplatz and the various institutes with their historic lecture halls are located in the heart of the old town. The new campus on Berthold-Beitz-Platz with its natural science and medical institutes, the large central library and the new canteen also offers excellent study conditions. If you want to immerse yourself in the exciting history of the old university, you can take part in various guided tours and visit the assembly hall, the council hall and the dungeon, among other things.
