In addition to the Pomeranian dukes, the merchant family Homeyer and the shipbuilding engineer Haack as well as the painter and Romantic Philipp Otto Runge left their mark on the town's history. While the original paintings by Philipp Otto Runge are exhibited in the Hamburg Kunsthalle, the house where he was born in Wolgast shows Runge's life. In addition to painting, he made a decisive contribution to three-dimensional color theory, designed playing cards and wrote down fairy tales. The most famous, "The Fisherman and his Wife", was even included in the Brothers Grimm collection. In summer, classical concerts attract visitors to St. Peter's Church as part of the "Wolgaster Sommermusiken" festival.
