Wittenhagen Church

Wittenhagen Church—an octagonal historic monument built of fieldstone

The Wittenhagen Church, located in the Vorpommern hinterland, is one of the most architecturally unusual places of worship in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Built in 1758, it captivates visitors with its rare floor plan—a regular octagon with an interior diameter of 10.25 meters. The exterior walls are made of hewn rock and are an impressive 1.60 meters thick—a so-called Cyclopean masonry that gives the church its striking, massive appearance.

Renovation and Subtle Interior Design

After the building had been left to near-ruin, it was completely renovated in 1992. Today, the interior is presented in pure white, with the altar and crucifix serving as a serene focal point—an atmosphere that invites contemplation and silence. Particularly noteworthy is the preserved iron bell with a hand pull, which survived all wars unscathed and is now a true rarity in terms of its design. The church’s tent-shaped roof also contributes to remarkable acoustics, transforming every song into an impressive auditory experience. During the summer months, church services are held here regularly.
