Atelier Ulrike Northing in Vitte - Painting between nature and light
The Ulrike Northing studio in Vitte is an artistic meeting point on the car-free island of Hiddensee. Ulrike Northing, known as the island painter of Hiddensee, dedicates her work to the special qualities of the Baltic Sea region: the changing light, the tranquillity of nature and the vast seascapes. Floral motifs complement her work and show a wide range of painterly impressions.
Painting inspired by the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-VorpommernThe landscape around Hiddensee has provided painters with special inspiration for generations - similar to the coastal regions on Rügen, Fischland-Darß-Zingst or the area around Greifswald. Northing's works reflect this tradition and capture the characteristic atmosphere of the Baltic Sea coast in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern in their own unique way. If you would like to visit the current exhibition, you can find out about the opening times in advance on the display board in front of the town hall in Vitte.
How to get to Vitte on HiddenseeHiddensee is car-free and therefore only accessible by ferry. The nearest ferry pier for passengers is in the immediate vicinity of the studio in Vitte, as is the Trajekt pier. There are ferry connections from Stralsund and from Schaprode on Rügen. Rail travel is via Stralsund station, from where ferries depart for Hiddensee.

Asta Nielsen House "Karusel"
📍 Vitte
The Asta Nielsen House in Vitte - one of a total of four houses built by architect Max Taut. In addition to the island's wedding room, the Asta Nielsen House houses an exhibition on the Danish silent film diva Asta Nielsen and the architect Max Taut. The house was built in Vitte in 1922/23 as a summer house for the Berlin family Richard Müller. In 1929, Richard Müller sold the vacation home to the famous Danish actress Asta Nielsen. She often spent several months of the summer here on the island with her daughter and husband. Within a short time, the house became a meeting place for friends and acquaintances of Asta Nielsen, such as Joachim Ringelnatz and his wife, Heinrich George and Gerhart Hauptmann. When the National Socialists seized power in 1933, Asta Nielsen turned her back on Germany and left the house in 1935 (1936), complete with all its contents. During the war years and after until 1961, around 15 families, mostly war refugees, lived in the house one after the other. Most of Asta Nielsen's furnishings disappeared during this time. Only a few pieces of her furniture remained. From 1962, the municipality rented the building to the Ehmer couple, who were teachers. Renovations and alterations became necessary when the building was converted into a year-round residence. The fireplace was replaced by a tiled stove and gas heating was installed in 1995. In 1975, the Asta Nielsen House was placed under a preservation order. In 1989, the municipality acquired the house from the heirs of Asta Nielsen. After the building was vacated in May 2009 and had been empty for years, it was extensively renovated inside and out in 2014/15. Since then, it has housed the wedding room and an exhibition on Max Taut and Asta Nielsen. Admission: € 2.50 per person Guided tour: € 7.00 per person (admission + guided tour) Limited number of persons: 8 OPENING HOURS closed from 30.10.2020

The red house - Restaurant
📍 Vitte
Das rote Haus is a beautiful restaurant on the island of Hiddensee. We cook cosmopolitan food with ingredients from the region. The traditional Swedish-style wooden house is located in the middle of the village of Vitte on the island of Hiddensee. Painted red on the outside and brightly glazed on the inside, the recently renovated restaurant is invitingly friendly and cozy. In front of the house is the outdoor terrace with a view of the village, behind the house the herbs for the kitchen are planted in large raised beds. The kitchen with its recipes and ingredients draws its inspiration from the Baltic region. The dishes are delicious, modern and uncomplicated. Here, the fish comes from the Hiddensee cutter fishermen and the meat from the neighboring island of Öhe, where owner Mathias Schilling breeds his cattle and sheep. The small menu is supplemented by seasonal dishes of the day. Particularly popular are the Hiddensee codfish stew, the Öhe lamb stilton, the pearl barley risotto and the quark curls with cherries. Most vegetarian dishes can also be prepared vegan on request.
