Vitt shore chapel
The octagonal shore chapel on the high bank of Vitt.
The Altenkirchen poet priest Gotthard Ludwig Kosegarten initiated the construction of the shore chapel. Construction of the chapel began in 1806 according to plans by the Pomeranian master builder Rühs. Construction was interrupted by the Napoleonic Wars and the shore chapel was not completed and consecrated until 1816. The chapel is a simple octagonal building. The vestibule with the sacristy was added as early as 1852. The pulpit altar, designed in a Romanesque and eclectic style, was only added to the chapel in 1882. Above the altar is a copy of the painting "The Sinking Peter" (Mt 14, 22-33) by Philipp Otto Runge (1777-1818) made by the Stralsund painter Erich Kliefert. The painting was commissioned by Kosegarten in 1805 as an altarpiece for his former pupil in Wolgast. In 1990, the mural "People in the Storm" was executed by the Italian artist Gabriele Mucchi (1899-2002), one of the most important representatives of Italian realism. Just a ten-minute walk away, ecumenical waterside services are held on the last Sunday of every month at 3 pm in summer.

The interior of the chapel combines different eras and styles. The vestibule with sacristy was added in 1852. The pulpit altar in Romanesque and eclectic forms followed in 1882. Above the altar hangs a copy of the painting "The Sinking Peter" by Philipp Otto Runge (1777-1818), created by the Stralsund painter Erich Kliefert. The original was commissioned by Kosegarten from his former Wolgast pupil Runge in 1805. Another highlight is the mural "People in the Storm" (1990) by the Italian realist Gabriele Mucchi (1899-2002).
