Usedom City Information
The town of Usedom is a charming little town in the south of the island of Usedom.
It is steeped in history. The Anklamer Gate with its local history museum, St. Mary’s Church, City Hall, and the Schlossberg invite our guests to linger. The only German town on the island of Usedom was granted Lübeck city rights in 1298. Small and steeped in history, Usedom is situated on an isthmus in the southeastern part of the island. Once upon a time, here on Lake Usedom, it was a prominent center of trade and craftsmanship and a ducal residence: from 1153/55 to 1307/09, it was also a monastic site and, at times, a bishop’s seat; and a mint from the late 12th through the 15th century. Usedom once had a city wall and three city gates. Of these, the Anklamer Gate—a beautifully structured brick building—has survived. Centuries ago, the town had five churches and chapels; today, only the imposing St. Mary’s Church towers over the surrounding area. Walking along one of the renovated streets in the old town, you’ll reach the Schlossberg, where a granite cross commemorates the Christianization of the region. The beautifully restored houses, charming cafés, and small shops in the town are a feast for the eyes. Unlike in the old days, the city now extends beyond its city walls to include the Usedomer Winkel, the southern tip of the island. In total, the city of Usedom comprises 13 districts. Guests who love peace, seclusion, and nature will find everything they’re looking for here in the beautiful Achterland. When exploring the Usedomer Winkel, highlights include the church in Mönchow, the remains of the railway lift bridge, a new marina for water sports enthusiasts in Karnin, and the island’s only land-based cheese dairy in Welzin. One of the newest attractions in the town of Usedom is the TRAKTOREN WELT USEDOM, built in 2015. Spanning an exhibition area of approximately 7,500 m², the tractor museum offers a 100-year overview of German tractor history from both East and West.
Usedom Tourist Information: Gateway to the Island’s Oldest Town
The Usedom Tourist Information Center is the ideal starting point for exploring one of the most historic towns on the German Baltic Sea coast in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The town of Usedom, situated on an isthmus in the southeastern part of the island of the same name, was granted Lübeck city rights as early as 1298 and looks back on an eventful past as a trading center, ducal residence, monastic site, temporary bishop’s seat, and mint.
Anklamer Gate, St. Mary’s Church, and Schlossberg—Historic Landmarks in Usedom
As you stroll through the renovated alleys of the Old Town, you’ll discover numerous reminders of past centuries. The Anklamer Tor, a stately brick structure, is the only surviving one of the town’s three former city gates. The imposing St. Mary’s Church still towers over the surrounding area today, and the Schlossberg commemorates the Christianization of the region with a granite cross. The local history museum in the Anklamer Tor, as well as the Tractor Museum—which opened in 2015 and features approximately 7,500 m² of exhibition space—round out the town’s cultural offerings.
Usedomer Winkel – Nature and Tranquility in the South of Usedom Island
The town of Usedom comprises a total of 13 districts, including the so-called Usedomer Winkel—the tranquil southern tip of the island. Sights worth seeing there include the church in Mönchow, the historic remains of the railway lift bridge in Karnin, and the island’s only land-based cheese dairy in Welzin. Those seeking seclusion and unspoiled nature will find a welcome change of pace here from the busier beach resorts in the north of the island.

● Usedom
The island of Usedom is one of the most bird-rich areas in Germany. A total of over 280 species have been observed, 150 of which also breed here. Eleven species of birds of prey alone regularly breed in the nature park, including the white-tailed eagle. The Usedom Island Nature Park Information Center is located next to the Usedom Town Information Office on the first floor of the Klaus-Bahlsen-Haus Usedom. This visitor center was built and furnished with great commitment and generous support from the foundation of the same name. On the premises of the former Usedom town station building, visitors are provided with information on the natural environment of the island of Usedom using modern technology. The main theme of "water", a characteristic element of the island of Usedom, runs through the entire exhibition. Themes include the beach and dunes as a habitat, life in the reeds, fen use using the example of the Thurbruch and coastal dynamics using the example of the Streckelsberg. The topic of "Nature conservation on Usedom" is also explained using specimens such as sea eagles, otters and beavers. The Usedom Island Nature Park exhibition is complemented by a 23-minute audio-slide show on Usedom Island Nature Park, which can be seen in the hall of the Klaus-Bahlsen-Haus Usedom.
