The heart of the city! With a single panoramic view, 800 years of history come to life here.
Here, in the heart of the old town, architectural monuments from the Hanseatic, Swedish, Prussian and more recent periods stand side by side. The architecture of the Middle Ages and the Baroque meets the "new objectivity" of the early 20th century and the prefabricated buildings of the GDR era. This is also where the city's landmark - the town hall ensemble - presents itself from its most impressive side. The unique façade of the town hall and the mighty Nikolaikirche church right next to it are best viewed and, of course, photographed from the Alter Markt. The water surface with its meter-high fountain, directly on the pavement of the Old Market Square, is a magical attraction for children on hot summer days and provides amusing entertainment for restaurant guests and passers-by.
