Ahrenshoop wood
Nature reserve in Ahrenshoop
The Ahrenshooper Holz is a 55-hectare nature reserve with a particularly old tree population. The area was placed under protection on September 4, 1958 and has not been farmed since 1967 in order to protect the old beech forest with peaty areas and Europe's largest contiguous stand of holly. The Ahrenshooper Holz is also home to rare bird species such as stock dove, tawny owl and lesser spotted flycatcher as well as bats.
The small wood has inspired landscape painters such as Alfred Partikel, Fritz Grebe and Elisabeth von Eicken.
A hiking trail leads from the village road at the north-eastern end of the Baltic seaside resort of Ahrenshoop into the Ahrenshoop Wood.
