Hedge garden

The hedge garden in Schwerin's southern palace park is a garden that has been preserved from BUGA 2009.

Originally designed as a showcase for garden planting ideas, it is reminiscent of labyrinths and mazes from courtly parks. In the immediate vicinity are the Temple of Youth, a restaurant and the Schleifmühle Foam Museum. The hedge garden takes up the tradition of mazes from historical horticulture. Labyrinths served to amuse park visitors, created new perspectives, led them astray and to romantic, dreamy places. In addition, the former Buga show garden shows ideas for your own garden design, for garden boundaries and the creation of small secret garden corners. Different types of hedges - flowering and green - repeatedly create small spaces and oases of greenery.

Heckengarten Schwerin - garden art in the southern Schlosspark

The hedge garden in Schwerin's southern palace park is a lasting legacy of the 2009 Federal Garden Show. Originally conceived as a showcase of ideas for modern garden planting, it takes up one of the oldest traditions of garden design: the maze. Wandering through the winding paths, you are immersed in a green world of flowering and evergreen hedges that constantly create new spaces and hidden oases.

Labyrinths and hedge diversity - tradition meets design idea

Labyrinths and mazes were once part of the permanent repertoire of courtly parks and served to amuse visitors. The hedge garden in Schwerin revives this tradition: Different types of hedges create surprising perspectives, lead through narrow corridors and open up romantic, dreamy places. At the same time, the former BUGA show garden provides practical ideas for your own garden design - from borders to small, secret garden corners.

Excursion destination in the castle park - youth temple, grinding mill and restaurant

Equestrian monument to Frederick Francis II in Schwerin Palace Gardens

Equestrian monument to Frederick Francis II in Schwerin Palace Gardens

Schwerin

The equestrian statue of the Grand Duke of Mecklenburg-Schwerin stands opposite the palace on a square in the palace garden. Surrounded by flowers, rose bushes and the romantic arcades, the grounds are a highlight of the Schwerin Palace Gardens. A monument to the Grand Duke After the death of the popular Grand Duke Friedrich Franz II - the builder of the palace in Schwerin - his son commissioned the construction of a monumental statue. The object was financed by donations. It is considered to be the only historical equestrian statue in the whole of Mecklenburg. An eventful history The work by the Mecklenburg sculptor Ludwig Brunow was ceremoniously unveiled in 1893 - in the presence of high-ranking state guests such as Emperor Wilhelm II and Grand Duke Vladimir of Russia, as well as all the nobility of the Mecklenburg court. Inspired by the equestrian statues of Roman emperors and the Prussian Elector in Berlin, it was designed according to the typical, mostly military-influenced taste of the late 19th century. The figures of the Grand Duke and his horse stand on a marble plinth more than 4 meters high. The ruler's virtues The plinth is surrounded by allegories of the 4 virtues of rulers: Strength, Justice, Wisdom and Faith. Two commemorative plaques show events from Frederick Francis II's reign - the construction of the new university building in Rostock and the Grand Duke's entry into Schwerin in 1871. The monument was lucky to survive two wars and two dictatorships. It escaped being melted down for war purposes, the iconoclasm after the end of the war and being scrapped.
