Old Schwerin Cemetery - a historical monument in the middle of the city
The Old Schwerin Cemetery is one of the most remarkable historical sites in the Mecklenburg state capital. The extensive cemetery complex was laid out in 1863 - planned by the important Schwerin court architect Georg Adolf Demmler and horticultural director Klett. With its park-like design and varied vegetation, the grounds invite you to take a quiet stroll through Schwerin's history.
Listed burial grounds and Masonic symbolism
More than 30 listed graves can be visited at the Old Schwerin Cemetery. Members of the Mecklenburg court and important personalities from the city's history rest here. The Demmler burial chapel is particularly worth seeing: Georg Adolf Demmler designed it for himself and provided it with extensive Masonic symbolism - a unique testimony to his time. Visitors to the historic cities of the Baltic Sea region, such as Wismar, Rostock or Stralsund, will also find an extraordinary cultural heritage in Schwerin.
Travel to the Old Schwerin Cemetery by train and car
The Old Schwerin Cemetery is easy to reach by train: Schwerin Mitte train station is only around 600 meters away, while Schwerin main station is around 1.5 kilometers away. Those arriving by car can quickly reach the city center via the Schwerin-Görries freeway junction. The nearby "Bleicher Ufer" multi-storey parking lot offers parking spaces just 200 meters away on foot. In addition, the bus line stops directly at the "Alter Friedhof" bus stop.
