Schorssow Church Ruins
A hidden ruin on the shore of Schorssow House Lake.
The former fieldstone church was built in the 14th century. Between 1533 and 1540, an inheritance dispute between Knight Bernd Maltzahn of Penzlin and Wolde, as well as Lüdecke Maltzan of Osten, against Vollrath Preen led to the destruction of the church. The reason for this is unknown. In 2001 and 2002, the church ruins were restored. The park and the area surrounding the church hill were also given a dignified appearance. A new belfry was erected next to the church ruins. The Bachert bell foundry in Heilbronn cast a bell weighing 350 kg. The bell was consecrated on September 8, 2002.
Schorssow Church Ruins – 14th-Century Fieldstone Church
The Schorssow Church Ruins are among the quiet attractions in the inland region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, far from the well-known coastal towns such as Rostock, Stralsund, or Greifswald. Tucked away on the shore of Schorssow’s Haussee, it is a reminder of a medieval fieldstone church built in the 14th century. Between 1533 and 1540, an inheritance dispute arose between the noble families of Maltzahn and Preen, during which the church was destroyed—the exact circumstances remain unclear to this day.
Renovation and a New Bell for the Ruins in Schorssow
In 2001 and 2002, the church ruins underwent extensive restoration. The surrounding park and the church hill were also given a dignified design. A new belfry was erected next to the ruins. The Bachert bell foundry in Heilbronn specially cast a 350-kg bell, which was solemnly consecrated on September 8, 2002. Since then, the site has been a peaceful place of reflection in Mecklenburg’s lake district.
