The Gummanz Chalk Museum is located at an original chalk mining site on the island of Rügen. It is housed in the former factory hall of the Gummanz chalk works. In the interactive exhibition, you will learn many interesting and mysterious facts about the geology, fossils and use of Rügen's chalk, while the museum's chalk and nature trail gives you an insight into the technologies of historical chalk mining, informs you about the characteristic flora and fauna of abandoned chalk quarries and offers you a view over large parts of the island of Rügen as far as Stralsund and Hiddensee from the viewing platform on the so-called Kleiner Königsstuhl. The nature trail is approx. 2 km long. Rügen healing chalk is a pure, allergen-free natural product that is extracted from the natural chalk deposits on the island of Rügen. It consists of more than 90% pure calcium carbonate (CaCO3) and has a pH value of 8.5 and more, making it highly alkaline. Rügen healing chalk belongs to the peloids, which are naturally very fine-grained or are crushed and used for mud or paste-like applications. The Rügen Chalk Museum in Sagard is the only museum in Europe dedicated entirely to Rügen chalk. It is located in the former factory hall of the Gummanz chalk works - directly on a historic original site of chalk mining on the island of Rügen in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. The interactive exhibition vividly conveys interesting facts about geology, fossils and the diverse uses of Rügen chalk.

Chalk and nature trail with views as far as Stralsund and Hiddensee

The museum includes a chalk and nature trail around two kilometers long. It provides an insight into the technologies of historical chalk mining and provides information about the typical flora and fauna of abandoned chalk quarries. From the so-called Kleiner Königsstuhl on the viewing platform, the view extends over large parts of the island of Rügen as far as Stralsund and the island of Hiddensee on a clear day.

In the museum store of the Rügen Chalk Museum, visitors can purchase original Rügen healing chalk and natural cosmetics based on it. The healing chalk consists of more than 90 percent pure calcium carbonate, is allergen-free and is one of the recognized local remedies in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Depending on the application, it has a cooling, warming, circulation-promoting or anti-inflammatory effect - a special souvenir from the Baltic Sea.

The Gesundbrunnen Sagard was once a spa and bathing establishment in Sagard on the island of Rügen. Opened in 1795, the bathing and leisure establishment made Sagard the first bathing resort on Rügen and established a spa business, which operated until around 1830. A small wood near Sagard is called "Brunnenaue". It is a reminder of eleven years of lively spa and bathing life. Pastor Heinrich Christoph von Willich opened Rügen's first spa here in 1795. An area with several springs was laid out as a picturesque park. Paths led along the stream with small waterfalls and past seating areas and arbors. There were play tables and a carousel, swings and seesaws, and you could also try your hand at bowling. Various hot and cold baths were set up in the bathhouse for a medical therapy program. Music and dance events rounded off the visit. Today, little remains of the time between 1794 and 1806, when hundreds of guests came here in the summer for treatment and relaxation. Only the field name "Brunnenaue" has remained. The small wood with the meandering stream still gives a vague idea of this brief era.
