Binz bus shelter

Binz bus shelter
A building from 1967 by the Binz architect Ulrich Müther. Ulrich Müther (* July 21, 1934 in Binz; † August 21, 2007 Binz) was a German civil engineer and building contractor. He designed and built more than 50 shell structures, technically known as double-curved concrete shell structures, and thus became an exponent of architectural modernism. One of these shells is a measuring and test structure and was originally intended to be used as a test shell for the multi-purpose hall in Rostock Lütten Klein.

Bus shelter Binz - a concrete shell work by Ulrich Müther

The bus shelter in the Baltic seaside resort of Binz on the island of Rügen is a remarkable example of modern architecture on the German Baltic coast. The building was constructed in 1967 and was designed and built by Binz-born civil engineer Ulrich Müther. Müther, who lived in Binz from 1934 to 2007, is one of the most important representatives of modern shell construction in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Double-curved concrete shell as a test building

The bus shelter belongs to the group of so-called double-curved concrete shell structures for which Ulrich Müther gained national recognition. The structure is considered a measuring and test building and was originally intended to serve as a test shell for the multi-purpose hall in Rostock Lütten Klein. In total, Müther designed and built more than 50 such shell structures - testimonies to a unique art of engineering that can still be admired today at various locations in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
