St. John's Church in Mirow
The church, which houses the princely crypt, was built in the 14th century.
The Church of St. John was dedicated to John the Baptist. Today, the eastern apse and the foundation walls with their Gothic windows are still visible. There are no records of damage sustained during the Thirty Years’ War, but at the end of the war, the church became the property of the principality. On September 4, 1742, the church was completely destroyed by fire after being struck by lightning. The church was rededicated on the first Sunday of Advent. A Baroque altar now serves as the focal point of the princely castle church. For €3.00, you can begin your ascent to lofty heights. The first floor features a small exhibition on the history of the Knights of St. John, which began in 1226. It traces the history of the Mirow Commandery up to the Reformation. It also illustrates how pastoral care was later provided within the Order of St. John and offers a glimpse into the future. If you climb a wooden staircase, you’ll reach a room that hosts small, rotating exhibitions. If you climb another flight of stairs, you’ll reach the belfry. Continue up the stairs, and you’ll arrive beneath the observation deck. There, the association has set up a small exhibition with interesting information on the history of the church and the association’s work. The final steps of the metal spiral staircase lead to the observation deck. From there, you have a sweeping view of the waters surrounding Mirow.
St. John’s Church in Mirow – Gothic Heritage in the Heart of Mecklenburg
St. John’s Church in Mirow is one of the most remarkable historic buildings in the inland region of Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Built in the 14th century and dedicated to John the Baptist, the preserved eastern apse and the foundation walls with Gothic windows still bear witness today to the region’s medieval architecture. Those familiar with coastal towns like Rostock, Stralsund, or Greifswald will find in Mirow a gem that is just as steeped in history, yet less well-known.
From the Johanniter Commandery to the Princely Castle Church
The church has had an eventful history: After the Thirty Years’ War, the church passed into the possession of the principality. A lightning strike completely destroyed it on September 4, 1742. During its reconstruction, the church was fitted with a Baroque altar and served from then on as the princely castle church. A small exhibition inside highlights the history of the Order of St. John, which began in 1226, as well as the Mirow Commandery up until the Reformation.
Viewing platform overlooking the waters of Mirow
For three euros, visitors can climb the church tower. A metal spiral staircase leads up to the observation deck through several floors featuring changing exhibitions, passing by the belfry. From there, a sweeping panoramic view opens up over the diverse lake landscape surrounding Mirow—an impressive experience in the Mecklenburg countryside.
