Railroad lift bridge Karnin

Karnin · Usedom · 53.8462° N, 13.8630° E
Railroad lift bridge Karnin

The railroad lift bridge was the most modern in Europe when it was inaugurated in 1933.

The fixed superstructures were blown up in 1945. The previous single-track swing bridge was replaced by a double-track railroad lift bridge as part of the double-track expansion of the rail link to the island of Usedom. This was the most modern in Europe when it was inaugurated in 1933. In April 1945, the fixed superstructures were blown up and the connection between the mainland and the island of Usedom was interrupted. Since then, only the middle lifting section has remained, which was placed under a preservation order in 1990.

Karnin railroad lift bridge - the history of a European engineering achievement

The Karnin railroad lift bridge is one of the most fascinating industrial monuments on the German Baltic coast. Built as part of the double-track expansion of the rail link to the island of Usedom, it replaced an older single-track swing bridge. When it was inaugurated in 1933, it was considered the most modern railroad lift bridge in the whole of Europe - an impressive testimony to the engineering of the time in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Sprinkling in 1945 and the preserved lifting section as a monument

In April 1945, the bridge's fixed superstructure was blown up, permanently interrupting the direct rail link between the mainland and the island of Usedom. The only thing that has remained since then is the striking central lifting section, which is visible from afar over the Peene River. This last remnant has been a listed building since 1990 and is a reminder of an eventful history.

Exploring Karnin and the surrounding area on the Baltic Sea

Karnin is located in the south-west of the island of Usedom, not far from Greifswald and the Hanseatic city of Stralsund. The charming landscape around the Peene River invites you to take excursions along the Baltic coast of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. Visitors to the lift bridge often combine their trip with a visit to the Usedom hinterland or a drive along the coast towards Rügen.
