Hohen Mistorf erratic boulder garden - evidence of the Ice Age on the Baltic Sea

The Hohen Mistorf erratic boulder garden is a geological gem in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and part of the Mecklenburg Ice Age Landscape - Mecklenburg Switzerland Geopark. Covering an area of around 360 m², it brings together impressive souvenirs from the last ice age that were once transported from far away to the north of Germany - by huge glaciers that also shaped the landscape around Rügen, Fischland-Darß-Zingst and the entire Baltic Sea coast.

35 erratic blocks - granites, gneisses, fossils and a 1.6 billion-year-old boulder

Over the years, the Negnal family has collected 35 erratic boulders: granites, gneisses, sandstones and limestones. Information boards explain the type of rock, origin and age of each individual piece. The garden's special find is a boulder from the Gulf of Bothnia in the Baltic Sea - it is around 1.6 billion years old, making it one of the oldest tangible evidence of the Earth's history in the region.

Exhibition room with 200 rock samples and fossils from almost all geological formations

The open-air area is complemented by an exhibition room in which around 200 rock samples from almost all geological formations are on display - including fossils. The Hohen Mistorf erratic boulder garden is therefore equally suitable for those interested in geology, families with children and anyone who wants to better understand the natural history of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.
