St. Luke's Church, Graal-Müritz

Graal-Müritz · Fischland-Darß-Zingst · 54.2525° N, 12.2449° E
St. Luke's Church, Graal-Müritz

The Protestant church stands between the districts of Graal and Müritz, surrounded by the cemetery and flanked by houses.

It was designed by Gottfried Ludwig Möckel on behalf of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV and consecrated on October 18, 1908. Curiously, the tower does not face west, as is customary. The church in Graal-Müritz is a brick building; the tower is 26 meters high, and the total length of the church is also 26 meters. It is 12 meters wide. The nave is 15 meters long, 9.5 meters wide, and 8.5 meters high. The pointed barrel vault is reminiscent of a ship that has been pulled ashore and laid keel-up. Our church has three bells. A prayer bell inscribed with “wachet und betet” (watch and pray). It is the oldest bell and survived all the turmoil of war. Two bells that fell victim to the war in 1941 were replaced in 1952 with the inscription “Jesus lives and Jesus conquers” and in 1956 with the inscription “Marana tha—Our Lord is coming.” The organ was built by court organ builder Carl Börger from Rostock-Gehlsdorf. In 1953 and 1997, the pneumatic organ was expanded and overhauled by the firm W. Sauer from Frankfurt/O. Today, the church hosts Protestant services, cultural events, and exhibitions.

St. Luke’s Church in Graal-Müritz – A Brick Building Between Two Neighborhoods

St. Luke’s Church in Graal-Müritz is one of the most striking buildings in this Baltic Sea resort town in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania. Architect Gottfried Ludwig Möckel designed it on behalf of Grand Duke Friedrich Franz IV, and it was solemnly consecrated on October 18, 1908. The church stands between the districts of Graal and Müritz, nestled within a cemetery and surrounded by residential buildings. One architectural feature immediately stands out: unlike most churches, the tower is not located on the west side of the building.

Architecture and Dimensions of St. Luke’s Church

The brick building is 26 meters long and 12 meters wide—exactly as tall as the tower, which also stands 26 meters high. The nave measures 15 meters in length, 9.5 meters in width, and 8.5 meters in height. Particularly impressive is the pointed barrel vault inside, which resembles a ship pulled ashore upside down—an image that takes on a unique symbolic power on the Baltic Sea coast between Rostock and Fischland-Darß-Zingst.

Bells and Organ of St. Luke’s Church in Graal-Müritz

The church has three bells. The oldest bears the inscription “Watch and pray” and survived both world wars unscathed. Two additional bells, which were melted down in 1941, were replaced by the congregation in 1952 and 1956—bearing the inscriptions “Jesus lives and Jesus conquers” and “Marana tha—Our Lord is coming.” The pneumatic organ was built by court organ builder Carl Börger of Rostock-Gehlsdorf and was expanded and overhauled in 1953 and 1997 by the firm W. Sauer of Frankfurt/Oder.
