Dömitz bridge monument

Dömitz bridge monument
The bridge memorial in Dömitz is a monument to the reunification of Germany. Firmly anchored on an imposing pedestal, a segment of the old Elbe bridge near Dömitz commemorates the division of Germany, which lasted more than forty years. The road bridge, which connected Mecklenburg and Lower Saxony before the Second World War, was destroyed during an American air raid in the final days of the war. It was not rebuilt during the Cold War. On December 18, 1992, a new bridge over the Elbe was inaugurated at the same location. It was the first new bridge to be built over the former border river after the collapse of the GDR and has since been regarded as a symbol of reunification. At the junction of the B 191 and the B195, approximately one kilometer behind the eastern abutment of the Elbe bridge, is the bridge memorial, which consists of a relocated pillar and several meters of superstructure from the old bridge.

Dömitz bridge memorial - the history of German division on the Elbe

The Dömitz bridge memorial is an impressive testimony to Germany's post-war history. An original segment of the old Elbe bridge - consisting of a relocated pillar and several meters of superstructure - now stands on a striking plinth at the junction of the B 191 and B 195, around one kilometer east of the current bridge abutment. It is a reminder of more than forty years of German division and of how the Elbe once separated Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania from Lower Saxony as a border river.

From destroyed war bridge to symbol of reunification

The original road bridge, which connected Mecklenburg and Lower Saxony, was destroyed by an American air raid in the final days of the war. It was not rebuilt during the Cold War. It was not until December 18, 1992 that a new Elbe bridge was inaugurated on the same site - the first new bridge to be built over the former border river after the end of the GDR. Anyone familiar with the historical sites of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, such as the Hanseatic cities of Wismar, Rostock or Stralsund, will find Dömitz to be an equally important, albeit less well-known, piece of regional history.

Travel to the Dömitz bridge monument by train and bus

The nearest train station is Dannenberg Ost, around 8.7 km away; Hitzacker (approx. 12.8 km) is also a possible travel option by train. By bus, the line stops at Dömitz ZOB, from where it is only about 1.3 km to the monument. For travelers coming from the Baltic Sea coast, the B 191 offers a direct connection to the region.
